Poverty Drives Hunger

Universal Declaration on the Eradication of Hunger and Malnutrition

Around the world, 648 million people live in extreme poverty. They survive on less than $2.15 a day, an amount which is impossible to support a healthy livelihood in any part of the world.

Without sufficient and sustainable incomes, families cannot afford access to nutritious food, clean water, or health care. As a result, one in three children in low- and middle-income countries suffers from chronic undernutrition. Without treatment, hunger can lead to stunted growth, limited mental and emotional development, and even death.

World Food Conference convened under General Assembly resolution 3180 (XXVIII) of 17 December 1973; and endorsed by General Assembly resolution 3348 (XXIX) of 17 December 1974.

The Gurkani Foundation strategies that can help address food insecurity and malnutrition include:

 Investing in smallholder farmers.

Promoting a planetary health diet.

Empowering women and reducing gender inequality.

Investing in climate-smart agriculture

We save lives by preventing, detecting, and treating hunger.

Gurkani Foundation is dedication Action Against Hunger pioneered some of the earliest formulas and approaches to treating malnourished children. Around the world, our teams work in health centers, on mobile teams, and in communities to find cases of malnutrition and ensure that children receive lifesaving treatment. Every year, our community-based nutrition programs reach hundreds of thousands of mothers and children.

  • Hunger is the distress associated with lack of food. The threshold for food deprivation, or undernourishment, is fewer than 1,800 calories per day.
  • Undernutrition goes beyond calories to signify deficiencies in energy, protein, and/or essential vitamins and minerals.
  • Malnutrition refers more broadly to both undernutrition and overnutrition.
  • Food security relates to food availability, access, and utilization. When people have consistent and adequate access to enough safe and nutritious food to maintain an active and healthy life, they are considered food secure.

Teach, Support, and Empower Parents

Our teams train community health workers to educate mothers, fathers, and other caregivers about the benefits of breastfeeding and improved nutrition to help babies and young children grow up strong and healthy.

Action Against Hunger takes a tailored approach to address communities’ needs and harness their unique resources, boosting agricultural production, jump-starting local markets, and supporting small businesses. These efforts enhance sustainable sources of food and income while strengthening local food systems.
